Brain Mill Press
For Readers

Our purpose as a press is to build a catalog of stories about all facets of the human experience with love. We know readers are smart, and readers are interested. Our books are for readers who are looking for stories of radical authenticity that make them feel intensely, think in new ways, and seek deeper connections to their communities and the world. We seek engagement with readers through our newsletter, our blog, and our social media outlets, which feature ongoing and transparent production news about our titles; original material produced by our authors and guest writers; and shared articles, news stories, and essays on subjects of interest and significance to our community. We know that readers are passionate about the books they read. For this reason, we want preorders of our books to reflect the passionate reader’s anticipation back to her through early access to our books in fine first editions. Brain Mill Press fine first editions are print books that feature original cover art, interior illustration, and beautiful production values. Readers who preorder also receive an artwork bonus gift created specifically for the book. Those who support Brain Mill Press receive the earliest access to preorders. We invite you to sign up for our newsletter, support the press, and learn more about our love books.

For Authors

Brain Mill Press publishes “love books for humans.” Our books are about all kinds of people and are meant to reach readers who define humanity based on diverse lived experiences. Our goal is to build a catalog of radically authentic stories and poetry about all facets of the human experience with love, understood as broadly as possible. We are particularly interested in submissions from women, people of color, and LGBTQIA+ authors. As a “story-first” publisher, we flatten genre distinctions by focusing our production and marketing decisions around what is special and appealing in each work. We commission or purchase original art for every cover, pay for innovative and original cover design, and invest in high-quality editing of all titles. Every book is different, and every book deserves to be produced, marketed, and sold on its own unique merits. Authors who publish with Brain Mill Press can expect their work to appear in a collectible, signed “fine first edition” of a limited number of copies with high production values, as well as in ebook and general-release print editions. Royalties and subrights terms are generous for the industry, and all terms are negotiable. We are happy to work with agents or with authors representing themselves. We open submissions to novelists and poets several times a year through general and specific calls. Our poetry series publishes chapbooks and single-author collections in alternate years. Our novella contest selects three novellas for publication each year. Each press series opens and closes to submissions at the series editors’ discretion. We also publish essays by writers and artists on Voices, our online platform. We invite submissions on monthly themes or to our Makers on Making column. We also consider proposals for new columns. Brain Mill Press pays for essay submissions at industry-standard rates. Currently open calls are posted on our submissions page and listed on our Submittable portal. Join our newsletter list to keep abreast of our latest acquisitions and call announcements.

For Artists

Supporting makers, including artists, is part of our mission at Brain Mill Press. One way we do this is to use original art on all Brain Mill Press covers. We work with photographers, painters, collage artists, illustrators, printmakers, and other 2-D artists to create appealing cover imagery to represent every story we publish. We also seek out artists to create unique art gifts to represent every Brain Mill Press title. These art gifts accompany fine first editions of the book and are highly anticipated by our readers. Artists who enjoy writing should consider writing a column for Makers on Making, a monthly feature on our online platform that highlights the art process, success, failure, and what we learn from them. Details can be found on our submissions page. All of the artists whose work we use are featured on our website and in our newsletter, credited in our publications, and compensated financially. Interested in working with Brain Mill Press? Contact us with a link to your portfolio, submit to any open calls, or subscribe to our newsletter to keep up with announcements about our art needs.

Problematic Fave

“I reject the notion that all romance novels are crappily written, mass-produced heteronormative mommy porn, responsible for making women long for things they can’t have and also somehow setting women back hundreds of years. But I reject the standard response to these charges: that romance is actually super-duper feminist. “

Confronting and darling, every word a perfect warm circlet of pink blood, My Tall Handsome raids every crystal jar on the lace-topped vanity for truth, poison, and song until you can’t remember why you ever thought pretty was better than powerful, sugar was better than bitter medicine, or dancing needed more music than your own voice.
