For Authors

Brain Mill Press publishes around twenty titles a year in fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and comics. BMP also has an online journal, VOICES, which publishes columns and commentary.

We are primarily interested in submissions from women, people of color, and LGBTQIA+ authors. As a “story-first” publisher, we flatten genre distinctions by focusing our production and marketing decisions around what the appeals are in each project. We commission or purchase original art for every cover, pay for innovative and original cover design, and invest in high-quality editing of all titles. BMP titles are internationally distributed in ebook and print editions and available everywhere print books and ebooks are sold.

Royalties and subrights terms are generous for the industry, and all terms are negotiable. We are happy to work with agents or with authors representing themselves.

We open submissions to novelists and poets several times a year through general and specific calls. Our poetry series publishes chapbooks and single-author collections in alternate years. Our novella contest selects two novellas for publication each year. Each press series opens and closes to submissions at the series editor’s discretion.

We also publish essays by writers and artists on VOICES, our online platform. We invite submissions on monthly themes or to our multiauthor columns. We also consider proposals for new columns. Brain Mill Press pays for essay submissions at industry-standard rates. Currently open calls are posted on our submissions page and listed on our Submittable portal.

For Artists

Supporting makers, including artists, is part of our mission at Brain Mill Press. One way we do this is to use original art on all Brain Mill Press covers and to illustrate VOICES, our online journal. We work with photographers, painters, collage artists, illustrators, printmakers, and other 2-D artists to create appealing cover imagery and interior illustrations to represent every story we publish.

Artists who enjoy writing should consider writing a column for Makers on Making, a monthly feature on our online platform that highlights the art process, success, failure, and what we learn from them. Details can be found on our submissions page.

All of the artists whose work we use are featured on our website and in our newsletter, credited in our publications, and compensated financially and retain rights to their work.
